The Russian prosecutor's office on Tuesday requested thirteen years in prison against the opponent Alexeï Navalny, tried in a case of "fraud" and "offending the court" and who is already serving a sentence of two and a half years in prison.
"I ask for a 13-year custodial sentence to be imposed," said prosecutor Nadezhda Tikhonova, quoted by Russian news agencies.
A fine of 1.2 million rubles
She also demanded a “two-year restriction of freedom” sanction and a fine of 1.2 million rubles (9,500 euros at the current rate) against Navalny, considered the main opponent of President Vladimir Putin.
Since February 16, Alexeï Navalny, 45, has been on trial within the very walls of his penal colony 100 km east of Moscow.
Investigators accuse him of embezzling millions of rubles in donations to his anti-corruption organizations and of "contempt of court" at one of his previous hearings.
Recovery in Germany
In 2020, the opponent spent several months recovering in Germany after narrowly surviving poisoning by a nerve agent, for which he holds President Vladimir Putin responsible.
He was arrested in January 2021 upon his return to his country and sentenced to two and a half years in an old case of "fraud" dating from 2014. A sentence which caused an outcry in the West and sanctions against Moscow.
Considered an "extremist"
In June 2021, the main opposition organizations were qualified as “extremists” by the courts, a decision which led to their closure and the prosecution of many of their activists.
Many of them are now in exile.
Recently, Alexei Navalny spoke out against the Russian army's offensive in Ukraine and called on his supporters to demonstrate for peace despite the risk of arrest and serious legal proceedings.
