Peruvian Congress launches impeachment proceedings against president

Peru's Congress on the 14th with 76 votes in favor, 41 votes against and 1 abstention result, launched the process of impeachment of the current President Castillo.

Peruvian opposition lawmakers accused Castillo on the 8th of "moral incompetence" and submitted a motion of impeachment to Congress.

The charges against Castillo include alleged corruption, illegal promotions involving the military and police systems and the appointment of questioned officials to cabinet ministers.

According to the relevant agenda, Congress will debate and vote on the impeachment case on the 28th of this month.

Impeachment of the president requires the support of at least 87 members of Congress.

This is the second time Castillo has faced impeachment since taking office on July 28 last year.

In November last year, opposition lawmakers filed an impeachment against Castillo for "moral incompetence", but failed to start the debate and voting procedures for the impeachment case because he did not receive at least 52 votes in favor.
