The Israeli Minister of Communications, Yoaz Hendel, admitted that the malfunction that affected a number of official websites was the result of a cyber attack carried out by hackers.

He explained that the attack targeted - on Monday - non-security government websites, and said that there are no fears of information leakage.

The Ministry of Communications described this hack as a "large-scale cyber attack", and did not accuse any party of carrying it out.

And Israeli media had said that several government websites in Israel were down for a few minutes, as a result of a cyber attack.

Haaretz newspaper reported that among the websites that were attacked: the websites of the ministries of the interior, health, justice and welfare, and the office of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

And it quoted a security source as saying that this is the largest cyber attack ever against Israel, and it is likely that a government agency or a large organization carried out this cyber attack.

The Defense Foundation and the Internet Directorate declared a state of emergency in order to determine the extent of the damage, and to check whether the attack hit strategic sites and government infrastructure, such as electricity and water companies.

And the government services and information website said - later via Twitter - that the attack blocked access to "a number of sites, including government sites," but that the service had fully resumed.

It is reported that in some cases, Israeli officials point the finger at Iran or groups backed by it.
