Russia and Ukraine have on several occasions agreed to open humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians from the worst-affected areas.

But despite repeated attempts, the besieged city of Mariupol has remained under siege.

Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of violating the ceasefire around the city, which is believed to have made the evacuations impossible.

On Monday, however, an evacuation from Mariupol was successful for the first time.

About 160 cars were able to leave the city, according to consistent data from Russia and Ukraine.

In the isolated city, there is a shortage of most things - including food and water.

A convoy of supplies has been sent to the city, but according to Ukrainian authorities, it has been blocked by Russian forces.

A new attempt to reach the city will be carried out on Tuesday, it is stated.

Several air strikes

Russian rockets, airstrikes and shelling have continued around the country.

Residential buildings in Kharkiv and Kyiv, among others, were met during the day.

A TV tower in the Rivne region is also said to have been hit by Russian shelling.

At least nine people were killed, according to local authorities.

Russia also warns that it will attack facilities that manufacture or repair weapons.

The Kremlin says it is retaliating for an alleged Ukrainian rocket attack on the city of Donetsk, which is controlled by Russian forces.

Call paused

On Monday, talks between Russia and Ukraine continued.

The delegations had a video link meeting.

However, there is no information that the talks have progressed, despite the fact that the meeting was preceded by optimistic statements from both sides.

In the afternoon, it was announced that a "technical break" had been taken and that the talks would resume on Tuesday.

New EU sanctions

EU member states have approved a new sanctions package aimed at Russia.

The details have not been made public, but according to the French presidency, it is about being able to raise customs duties on Russian goods.

The proposal submitted by the European Commission on Friday mentioned, among other things, a ban on investments in Russia's energy sector.
