This is one of the most striking images since the start of the war in Ukraine: a pregnant woman evacuated from the Mariupol pediatric hospital, after being seriously injured during the bombardment of the establishment by Russia.

According to the Associated Press, the victim and her baby, born by caesarean section, did not survive.

“More than 30 minutes of resuscitation did not yield any results for the mother and the child,” doctor Timur Marin told the news agency.

Her pelvis had been crushed by the debris of the explosion and her hip had been detached.

Doctors at the hospital where she was taken tried to save the child by delivering him urgently by caesarean section, but he did not survive.

Very quickly, the mother's state of health deteriorated, said the doctor interviewed by the agency.

A bombardment unanimously condemned

The bombing of the maternity ward was unanimously condemned by the international community.

“We were all shocked by these images of a” affected “maternity in the city center”, declared Emmanuel Macron Thursday, before a European summit in Versailles.

The French president denounced the “manifest objective of killing civilians”.

The Mariupol maternity "is the third maternity" bombed "to our knowledge", said a UN spokesperson.
