  • Events The sabotage of the Isabel Zendal Hospital: early morning alarms, material contaminated with Covid-19 and 10,000 euros in stolen devices

The National Police arrested two nurses from the Isabel Zendal Hospital (Madrid) at dawn on March 10 after stealing, on their last day of work,

medical instruments, medical supplies and medicines worth 5,000 euros

.

The arrested are 24 and 23 years old and have no police record.

They alleged that they took the medical supplies and devices to donate them to humanitarian aid destined for the Ukraine War.

The two nurses

were assigned to the ICU of the hospital

, but they are workers from October 12, who had come to reinforce the center's staff at the beginning of 2021, due to the high incidence of Covid, according to sources from the Ministry of Health.

As a consequence of the de-escalation, they returned this week to their original center, according to the same sources.

The hospital informed the same Thursday of the arrest of the two employees to the Directorate of Human Resources of the Ministry of Health and sent them a safety report and another on medical supervision.

The events occurred in the early hours of last Thursday in the parking lot for the staff of the enclosure.

The two nurses were discovered when they

removed the hidden instruments in two large lingerie bags and put them in one of their cars.

His workday was not over yet.

It was 04:00 in the morning.

A security guard observed the two nurses through the cameras of the video surveillance system and warned several colleagues to check what they were putting in the car.

The workers refused to open the vehicle

, so the guards notified the hospital supervisor.

Finally, it was discovered that they were carrying medical devices, sanitary instruments and medicines in the two bags and the National Police was immediately notified.

When agents from the Hortaleza police station arrived, they

proceeded to verify the facts.

In the trunk of the vehicle, the National Police found two large bags with masks, gloves, underpads, ampoules, intravenous drips, tracheostomy tubes, syringes, sanitary devices and numerous medications that require a medical prescription for their administration.

More than 5,000 euros in material that is suspected of being stolen at dawn from the hospital warehouse.

The agents questioned the two nurses, who

justified their action by claiming that they were going to deliver it to donate it to those affected by the war in Ukraine.

They were arrested and transferred to the dungeon of the Hortaleza police station,

accused of a crime of robbery.

All the material was returned to the sanitary enclosure.

The Isabel Zendal Hospital is the medical center specialized in pandemic crises, which has been treating Covid patients.

Currently, there is only one medical ward for patients with coronavirus with its corresponding ICU.

Last year the National Police investigated a series of acts of sabotage in the medical center, but could not find out who was behind these events that occurred a year ago.

The police investigations began as a result of

a complaint filed by the Management Coordinator of the Madrid Health Service of the Community of Madrid

for a series of damages, "apparently intentional", that occurred in various facilities and devices of the aforementioned emergency hospital practically since its opening in December 2020.

The complainant also stated that various medical instruments and tools had disappeared from the hospital, most of

which were in the so-called "bus stop carts" located in the ICU;

although these robberies or thefts occurred in other hospital facilities, such as in the intermediate care unit.

On this issue, the Prosecutor's Office decided to file the case due to the lack of evidence on the author of the facts.

For this matter a caretaker of the center came to testify before the judge as investigated.

However, the public ministry argues that

"there is no record" of the identity of anyone who had witnessed the events

when the boycotts took place.
