A website close to the decision-making circles in Tehran reported that Iran suspended its talks with Saudi Arabia on Sunday, two days before the two sides entered into a new round of negotiations in Iraq.

And Reuters news agency quoted the "Nornews" website that the authorities in Tehran suspended talks with Riyadh without explaining the reasons.

The agency described the site as belonging to the highest security apparatus in Iran.

On Saturday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein said that his country would host a new round of Saudi-Iranian talks next Wednesday.

Diplomats hope the opening of direct channels between Iran and Saudi Arabia is a sign of easing tensions across the Middle East after years of hostilities that have brought the region to the brink of war.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed that "Saudi Arabia is an important country in the region, and our differences should not prevent relations between the two countries," adding that "those who benefit from these relations are the peoples of the region and countries."

On the negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, "The negotiations in Baghdad have made progress, although their tangible results were few and limited."

Neighborhood and Neighborhood

Earlier, Iran welcomed the Saudi Crown Prince's recent statements regarding the neighborhood relations between the two regional rivals, saying that they showed Riyadh's "willingness" to resume diplomatic relations severed since the beginning of 2016.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that "what a high-ranking Saudi official said recently indicates their desire to build bilateral relations with Iran, and we welcome that," according to the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

And Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had recently said - to the American magazine "The Atlantic" - that the Iranians "are our neighbors, and they will remain our neighbors forever, we cannot get rid of them, and they cannot get rid of us, so it is better to solve things, and that We are looking for ways to coexist."

The Crown Prince added, "During 4 months, we had discussions, and we heard many statements from Iranian leaders, which were welcome to us in the Kingdom (...) and we will continue the details of these discussions, and I hope that we will reach a position that is good for both countries, and constitutes a bright future for Saudi Arabia and Iran." .

It is noteworthy that Saudi Arabia severed relations with Iran in January 2016, after its embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad were attacked by protesters following the execution of the Saudi Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
