An American journalist has been killed in an attack by Russian troops near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

Another American journalist was injured in the attack in the Irpin suburb, northwest of Kyiv, said surgeon Danylo Shapovalov, who was on site as a volunteer.

Reporters from the French news agency AFP in Irpin saw the dead man's body.

According to the police chief of Kyiv, the reporter is said to be the video journalist Brent Renaud.

Because he wore a New York Times press badge, it was assumed he had worked as a war correspondent for the newspaper.

The New York Times shared its condolences on the reporter's death.

But he was not on her behalf.

Brent Renaud was a gifted photographer and filmmaker who has contributed to the newspaper over the years, most notably in 2015.

However, he was not in Ukraine on behalf of the New York Times.

According to medic Shapovalov, Renaud and his injured colleague were traveling in a car with a Ukrainian civilian when the car was hit by bullets.

The civilian was also injured.

Irpin has been the target of Russian attacks for days, which have left numerous civilians injured and dead.
