The United Nations WFP = World Food Program has set up temporary offices in cities in southern Poland to strengthen food assistance to shelters in Ukraine and neighboring countries.

According to the UNHCR = United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of people evacuated from Ukraine following the military invasion by Russia exceeded 2.59 million as of the 11th.



Also, in Ukraine, the Russian army has deprived many people of their place of residence, and food and drinking water are in short supply in various places.



Under these circumstances, the United Nations WFP has set up a temporary office in the city of Krakow in southern Poland to strengthen food assistance to shelters in Ukraine and neighboring countries.



WFP's Jacob Cologne, who is responding to this crisis, told NHK on the 12th, "We plan to deliver food mainly to Kyiv, Mariupol, and Kharkov, which are surrounded by Russian troops." I explained the activity.



On top of that, regarding the difficulty of this activity, "Food itself is in Ukraine, but it has not been delivered to where it is needed due to supply chain problems such as fewer truck drivers. Access to food is possible. People are becoming more and more exhausted, "he said, emphasizing that he is particularly focusing on securing delivery methods.



It also plans to use food vouchers for people who cannot buy food because they evacuated without having enough cash.



Regarding WFP, Foreign Minister Hayashi has met with WFP Secretary-General Beasley and has announced that Japan will contribute a portion of the $ 100 million it has prepared for emergency humanitarian assistance to WFP.
