At least
60 people died
during the night from Thursday to Friday when
a train derailed in the Kolwezi region,
in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
.
DRC, local sources and the public railway company said on Saturday, as explained by Marc Manyonga Ndambo, director in charge of infrastructure at the National Railway Company of Congo (SNCC).
Although it was a freight train and they are
completely prohibited from transporting people,
it was carrying
"several hundred clandestine travelers"
who were trapped in the wagons and fell into a ravine.
The train, made up of 15 cars, 12 of which were empty, came from Luena, in the neighboring province of Haut-Lomami, and was headed for Tenke.
Although the cause of the accident is unknown, everything indicates that it was caused by
the dilapidated state of the tracks.
Train derailments are frequent in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the sinking of ships with more cargo than allowed in the country's lakes and rivers.
Often, in the absence of passenger trains or passable roads,
passengers use freight trains to travel long distances.
