Direct Last minute of the war in Ukraine
The Spanish position The Government will activate a "reserve of strategic assets" to ensure Spain's supplies in the face of the war in Ukraine
War Some thirty children with cancer from Ukraine arrive in Madrid this Friday on an army plane to continue their treatment in Spain
When they set foot on Spanish soil this afternoon (at the
Torrejón de Ardoz
air base ) they will do so carrying a tiny suitcase with the few clothes and belongings they managed to get out of Ukraine at the time their families decided to flee with them from the bombs.
But the backpack that most worries those who will attend to the thirty children with cancer who arrive in
Spain
from today is the emotional one.
“Just two weeks ago, these children lived in their homes, where there was a microwave to heat breakfast and a television to watch cartoons.
They are children like the ones we see leaving Ukraine every day hugging their stuffed animals.
But these, in addition to the trauma of separation from their parents, of sleepless nights hidden in shelters, in addition to the cataclysm that the war has brought to their lives, they wage their own battle against a disease that does not understand exceptional situations, " affirms
Mariano Ugarte
, who lost a son to cancer 11 years ago and who chairs the
Pablo Ugarte Association
, dedicated to supporting medical research and one of the institutions that has made it possible for Spain to participate in the evacuation and health care of these minors.
Spain could receive a hundred minor patients
The kids who arrive in
Madrid
today will be able to resume their treatment at the
Niño Jesús, 12 de Octubre, Gregorio Marañón
and
La Paz
hospitals , where they will previously undergo a triage to find out the details of their situation and assess, if necessary, their entry.
In addition, three more groups are expected to arrive (up to a hundred minors) who could be received in hospitals in
Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante
and
Seville
.
All these children have already survived a war and now they are offered a chance to survive the disease as well.
The mobilization started in Spain from the
Spanish Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
(SEHOP) after receiving the alarm from the
International Society of Pediatric Oncology
(SIOP).
Dozens of children undergoing cancer treatment were leaving Ukraine and in need of urgent medical care.
The most serious cases are being treated in hospitals in
Poland
(border country).
Germany, the United Kingdom
or
Israel
have also already received some groups of patients.
In Spain, SEHOP contacted the
Aladina Foundation
, which is involved in logistics, and the Pablo Ugarte association, which was in charge of asking the
Ministry of Defense
for help with the transfers.
The response from the minister, Margarita Robles, putting the Army at the service of the operation, came to them right away.
“We have the plane”, she repeated to herself over and over again in the messages that the promoters of the initiative enthusiastically sent each other throughout last Tuesday.
Work is already under way to find stable accommodation for them and their families
In principle, during the first four days, these minors and their families will stay in hotels in the capital, but a stable residence is already being sought for them in the cities where they will receive medical attention.
And to have all the resources they will need during their stay in Spain, other organizations have already mobilized, such as the
Federation of Parents of Children with Cancer, the Josep Carreras Foundation, El Sueño de Vicky, Unoentrecienmil, Juegaterapia, the Villavecchia Foundation
or
Cris against Cancer
, in addition to the
Community
and the
Madrid City Council
, which collaborate in the device together with the Ministries of
Health
and Defense.
In Spain there are about 1,200 cancer diagnoses in children every year.
The incidence in Ukraine is similar, since it has a similar population size.
According to SEHOP data, childhood cancer affects 138 children per million children under 15 years of age each year.
Currently, thanks to the development of Pediatric Oncology in Spain, "
81% of children
with a tumor will be cured of their disease, with no or minimal sequelae in most cases."
