One of the best disguises to hide the most disturbing feelings is

laughter

and, of course, making people laugh.

When just three decades ago

Benny Hill died of a heart

attack, the audience was stunned by the kind of life that one of the best comedians in audiovisual history had led.

Some experts considered him

one of the best

comedians on a par with Charles Chaplin, but with a much larger audience.

In fact, the protagonist of

The Great Dictator

had a shelf full

of Hill's films in his office.

After leaving school and working as

a milk delivery man,

the young man began to write comedy scripts that in 1952 caught the attention of the

bosses of the BBC.

That was the origin of

The Benny Hill Show

(1955-1989), making him a

star in more than 140 countries,

including Angola, Nigeria or China (in Spain it premiered in 1981 on La 2) and earning the admiration of the legendary

Johnny Carson, who invited him

to his show on several occasions.

However, the British gave him pumpkins because he did not want to cross the Atlantic.

The only trip he used to allow himself was to Marseilles where

he stayed in boarding houses.

He was fluent in French and fluent in Spanish, German, Dutch and Italian.

The British comedian had amassed a

substantial fortune

estimated at 10 million pounds, but never

flaunted any

luxury.

Quite the contrary, he flaunted a

perfunctory stinginess

towards himself.

When he was earning 30 times the average British salary in the 1950s, Benny Hill

took the tube

to recording studios and

lived in a seedy boarding house

.

Turned into a millionaire, he avoided taking taxis, used public transport and even

walked

to places on numerous occasions.

He never bought a car because he couldn't bear those superfluous expenses and he never bought any property.

In fact,

he died in a rented two-bedroom apartment,

totally aseptic and where the crockery didn't even belong to him.

In his day to day it was normal to see him with

old-fashioned clothes

that he did not throw away until they were undone and worn out;

if his shoes broke he tried to

fix them with glue,

he always bought food in cheap neighborhood supermarkets where he took advantage

of last minute

deals .

He even refused to redo the roof of his mother's house because he considered it too expensive.

Currently, Benny Hill's

sketches

would not be broadcast on television due to the continuous objectification of women, always scantily clad with those who had

long hands, a vicious look

and there was the occasional threat of sexual harassment.

With the excuse of

slapstick

, everything was allowed until a network executive decided to

cancel his program for being sexist

and inducing sexual abuse.

He never married or had children.

It was rumored that he was homosexual and impotent, but according to some friends he actually had

serious dating problems

because he did not consider himself attractive enough to women.

It is known that he tried to marry twice, the first with the showgirl

Doris Deal

and the second with the actress

Annette Andre.

Sullen with the press, he confessed that he

hated interviews,

but in one of his brief statements before reaching global fame, he admitted that the type of woman he liked was the one who "worked in an office, a factory or a store, which is where there

are

the beautiful ones with common sense".

After suffering heart problems, Benny Hill died alone in his apartment at the age of 68.

After

two days without hearing

from him, his producer, Dennis Kirkland, found him in an armchair surrounded by food and dirty dishes.

His nephews, with whom he did not speak, were the

heirs to his vast fortune.
