The romantic date turned into a fiasco.

A 26-year-old thief who played sweetheart was taken into custody on Wednesday in Toulouse after a complaint was filed in February.

It came from a 22-year-old girl, living in the Croix-Daurade area, who had invited a stranger she met on social networks to her home.

He left the scene in the evening but the next morning, when she woke up, she no longer had her car keys and the vehicle had flown away, with her bank card inside.

A first name and traces on the networks

The car was found two days later, abandoned, and the card was used for a few tens of euros in contactless payments.

Investigators from the Property Crime Unit only had a first name and a description, but by exploiting CCTV images and social networks, they ended up identifying a suspect, already known to their services.

The man admitted the facts while in police custody.

He is summoned to court in June.
