The war undertaken by Russia in Ukraine is unprecedented in that all of its actors communicate through various social networks: journalists, soldiers and civilians thus reach a large number of people around the world via these new distribution channels. information... and misinformation!

To prevent any propaganda, large groups such as Meta (through its Facebook and Instagram apps), Google (Youtube) or Twitter have thus blocked or restricted the reach of certain Russian media, in particular Russia Today and Sputnik, in Europe... before the Russian government in turn blocks Facebook – and restricts access to Twitter – on its territory.

The Russian VKontakte very largely in the lead

Will these spectacular measures have the desired effect?

Not sure since Facebook and Twitter, with respectively 37% and 14% of users, are not among the most popular networks used in the Russian Federation: it is the local "monster" VKontakte that crushes the competition (73% ), followed by Youtube, Instagram and Odnoklassniki (42%), the second Russian network in terms of attendance.
