Washington warns against Moscow's use of biological or chemical weapons in Ukraine

On Wednesday, the White House warned against Russia's use of chemical or biological weapons in its war on Ukraine, under the pretext of misinformation spread by Moscow and repeated by China about the presence of US biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine.

"We have heard of Russia's false allegations about the presence of US biological weapons laboratories and the development of chemical weapons in Ukraine. We have also seen Chinese officials echoing these conspiracy theories," spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Twitter.

"Now that Russia has made these false allegations, and China appears to have endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia's possible use of chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine," she added.

"This is all a clear ploy on the part of Russia to try to justify its further deliberate, unjustified and unjustified attack on Ukraine," Psaki said.

She emphasized that "Russia has a track record of accusing the West of the same abuses committed by Russia itself. In December, Russia falsely accused the United States of deploying chemical weapons contractors in Ukraine."

"It is Russia that continues to support the Assad regime in Syria, which has repeatedly used chemical weapons. It is Russia that has long maintained a biological weapons program in violation of international law," Psaki said.

"Russia has a long and documented record of using chemical weapons, including attempted assassination and poisoning of Putin's political enemies such as Alexei Navalny," Psaki said.

She stressed that "the United States is in full compliance with its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological Weapons Convention and does not develop or possess such weapons anywhere."

Psaki considered the Russian behavior "unreasonable, it is a process of disinformation that we have seen time and time again from the Russians over the years in Ukraine and in other countries, which has been debunked, and an example of the kinds of false pretexts that we warn Russians not to invent."

A spokesman for the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, John Kirby, considered the Russian accusations of the United States about the presence of biological laboratories in Ukraine as "ridiculous and laughable."

"We do not develop biological or biological weapons and we have no information about the presence of such weapons in Ukraine," Kirby said.
