The sports world's response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been unusually harsh.

Russian athletes have been excluded from a number of international competitions.

But it is not just the athletes who meet.

Russian President Vladimir Putin himself is very interested in sports, and judo is especially close to his heart.

In the clip, you will hear about Putin's suspected rapid climbing in the judo ranks and see pictures of him practicing the sport.

"The least we can do right now"

He was recently stripped of several honorary titles by the International Judo Federation.

However, he still has his belt of honor.

- What is not okay for us is that he holds the eighth day, which is one of judo's highest belt degrees.

Together with Nordic colleagues, we have intense conversations about this.

The least we can do right now is to remove this degree of honor, says Kristiina Pekkola, chairman of the Swedish Judo Association.

Want to see more action

What do you think it means for the judo sport to be associated with a person like Putin?

- It is definitely not good for our brand.

And what scares me more is that they choose to go against the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee, by allowing activists from Russia and Belarus to compete in our Grand Slam, says Kristiina Pekkola.
