The fuller the freedom pathos, the more embarrassing the crash can be.

The traffic light coalition had to experience this in the autumn when they blew the opening horn while the omicron wave was building.

In the meantime, the Austrian government had also announced total victory over Corona.

This is not about a fight with a regime of terror from which freedoms have to be wrested.

No, the democratic legislators in the federal and state governments, supported by broad majorities and essentially also confirmed by the judiciary, have decided on measures to contain a danger for everyone.

It has always been clear that interventions can only be sustained for as long as they are necessary;

Of course, there is less clarity about the means and their suitability in a changing pandemic than in other situations.

The opening steps that have now been decided are logical.

However, they should not be celebrated too much, because they are not subject to an eternity guarantee either.

The situation can change

There is no acute overloading of the healthcare system, even if the numbers are rising again.

No need to worry yet.

The summer will be good again – the last one was too, by the way.

Only in view of a possibly bleak future, no restrictions must be maintained.

But it is still clear that the situation can change - and that tried and tested instruments may be needed again.

One should not say goodbye to the instrument of mandatory vaccination either, as Austria is now doing with good reason, but with another dashing about-face.

After a very long period of information and advertising, after the long-awaited inactivated vaccine was introduced, it became apparent that the vaccination rate was hardly increasing.

A comprehensive vaccination protects each individual as well as the community best and most appropriately.

The small minority who confuse freedom with selfishness should bear the cost of their twisted selfishness themselves.

The long-term corona consequences are significant.

Not only because of the pandemic, it's time to rethink freedom in the community.
