Europe and the United States have imposed harsh sanctions on Russia and large companies such as Apple, Paypal and Ikea have followed suit.

One goal of the measures is to create dissatisfaction among the Russian population, which in turn will put pressure on the country's government.

Alexander, who does not want to stand out with his real name for fear of reprisals, is strongly opposed to the war and Putin's government.

But he doubts whether sanctions affecting the population are the right way to go.

- I do not understand, the sanctions are aimed at ordinary people.

When the West imposes sanctions, it hits us.

Then Russia imposes sanctions, such as import bans, and then it also hits us.

We feel trapped between two fires.

Alexander does not believe that the Russians will protest and pressure the government.

- Last night, the police beat down a lot of protesters.

A girl was arrested for writing "peace" in the snow.

Whatever you do, whatever sanctions you face, people will not risk their lives to take to the streets.
