In the midst of the Russian war in Ukraine, an 11-year-old Ukrainian boy managed to travel 1,000 kilometers alone to reach Slovakia with a backpack, a note from his mother and a phone number written on his hand.

The boy traveled from the town of Zaporizhzhya in southeastern Ukraine, which is home to a power station seized by Russian forces last week.

According to reports, his parents had to stay in Ukraine to take care of a sick relative and send him to Slovakia with their relatives.

In a Facebook post, the Slovak Interior Ministry described the boy as "the greatest hero of the last night" after completing a journey that no one his age could dare undertake, attracting the admiration of officials "with his smile, fearlessness and determination that made him a true hero".

Reports said the boy's mother had sent him on a trip to Slovakia by train to find his relatives, and he was carrying a plastic bag, a passport and a letter in a folded paper.

When he arrived in Slovakia, border officials were able to contact his relatives in the capital, Bratislava. Volunteers took care of him, took him to a warm shelter, provided him with food and drink, and later reunited him with his family in Bratislava.

In a video released by the Slovak police, the mother thanked the government and the Slovak police for looking after her son. "People with big hearts live in your little country, please, save our Ukrainian children," added the mother, who was identified as Yulia Volodymyrvna Pysica.
