Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney failure are growing health problems that often occur together.

The diseases can be linked to aging, but also to physical inactivity and poor diet.

- We try to understand the underlying causes.

We know that our lifestyle plays a big role, for example what food we eat and how much we move, says Mattias Carlström, professor of cardiorenal physiology.

Together with his team at Karolinska University, he will now investigate whether concentrated beetroot juice, which contains the substance nitrate, can prevent the development or reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

- That we have received support from the Heart-Lung Foundation means a lot.

Without support, it would have been difficult to implement, says Mattias Carlström.
