War in Ukraine: US Chief of Staff visits Lithuania

US Chief of Staff General Mark Milley continued his European tour via Lithuania.

He visited the Pabradé military base where the 500 American soldiers who arrived shortly after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 are stationed, just a few kilometers from the border with Belarus.

Surrounded by some of the soldiers who arrived six months ago in Lithuania, the American general made a quick visit to the military site, located just 30 kilometers from the border with Belarus.

The 500 soldiers will stay a few more months given the situation in Ukraine.

The opportunity to reiterate once again NATO's commitment to defend Lithuania in the event of an attack.

“ 

We want to make things clear and make Russia understand that attacking Lithuania or any other NATO country will have an unacceptable price to pay for Russia

 ”, launched General Mark Milley in particular. 

Soon 3,500 additional soldiers in the region

For this, the United States is therefore in the process of deploying 3,500 soldiers in the region.

Lithuania must host a battle tank battalion, but also air defense elements.

The country is investing more and more in its security.

The government took the decision to finance the reception of a brigade.

Three camps with a capacity of 800 people each will be set up

 ,” explained Lithuanian Lieutenant General Valdemaras Rupsys. 

Lithuania, but also the two other Baltic countries are

calling for a change of posture within NATO with regard to its eastern flank.

Now is not the time for deterrence, but for defence.
