• This Monday, the Grande-Rue Saint-Michel in Toulouse is going one-way as part of an experiment.

  • Only buses and bicycles will now be able to use it from the city center, cars having to refer to adjacent axes.

  • The elimination of nearly 3,000 daily vehicles aims to calm the streets and promote the use of soft modes, ahead of the creation of an express bike network between the city center and Ramonville.

This Monday, with the end of the school holidays, traffic is likely to be dense in Toulouse.

And on the Grande-Rue Saint-Michel side, for its first day of one-way experimentation, we even expect it to be very, very complicated to drive.

After several months of consultation, the town hall is launching its project to calm the neighborhood, which will certainly go through a period of tension at the start.

Cars coming from the city center via Place Lafourcade will no longer be able to reach via this central axis of the Pink City, the true southern gateway to the city and access to the ring road.

Only buses and bicycles will now be allowed to use the street in both directions.

To access the district from the allées Jules-Guede, residents will now have to go to the boulevard Maréchal-Juin, the allées des Demoiselles and the adjacent streets.

The direction of traffic on rue Beethoven, between Grande-Rue and Achille-Viadieu is reversed.

However, the portion between the prison and the intersection with Boulevard des RĂ©collets will remain a two-way street.

Foundation stone of the Express Bike Network

This small revolution which aims to eliminate transit traffic is the first stone of a larger project to renovate the district.

“A meeting before the summer holidays is scheduled to take stock of this experiment.

Throughout the year, the town planners in consultation with the population will continue to work on a neighborhood redevelopment project, the greening of the street,” says Jonnhy Dunal, the neighborhood mayor.

A rehabilitation project which will be definitively adopted by the end of the year, for the first pickaxes next year and a delivery for 2024. A project which should cost between 7 and 8 million euros.

The elimination of nearly 3,000 vehicles that pass through there every day from Monday also initiates the future creation of the Express Bike Network (REV), which will eventually connect the city center to Ramonville-Saint-Agne.
