Last summer, BB in Lycksele was forced to stay closed for three weeks because there were no midwives to staff all the shifts.

Ahead of this year's summer, politicians have said that all three maternity wards, Umeå, Skellefteå and Lycksele will be open.

But last year, seven full-time midwives were missing before the summer.

This year, 12 are missing.

- We have a worse situation this year, several midwives have resigned during the year so the situation is under pressure, says Olov Grankvist, operations manager at the Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology Västerbotten, CFOG.

Attracted by SEK 30,000 a week

To try to attract the staff to work during the summer, the company has offered redemptive midwives who work certain weeks a bonus of SEK 30,000 a week.

But not everyone gets the money.

- It is only midwives at the birth who receive money, not midwives at BB or in specialist maternity care, we risk dividing the work team into an a and b team, says Karin Järback, midwife and elected representative at Vårdförbundet.

Could you have done something different as you see it before the summer?

- I think that the offer of money could have been out for a larger part of the summer, to make it more fair.
