The catheterization team at Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah succeeded in treating a 60-year-old patient who suffers from severe regurgitation of the mitral valve (an expansion of the valve that separates the heart muscles), which causes blood to flow into the left ventricle after leaving it, and for the first time to install a valve clip without surgery. The first at the state level, while the Executive Director of Al Qassimi Hospital called on the Ministry of Health and insurance companies in the country to include catheterization operations in the list of services they provide to patients, so that they can perform the operation easily.

The Executive Director of Al Qassimi Hospital, Dr. Aref Al-Nouriani, said that the patient complained last year of shortness of breath, and visited several hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah more than 10 times, and it turned out that he suffers from severe regurgitation in the mitral valve, reaching the fourth degree, which is the highest in such cases, It is useful that the patient suffers from weakness in the heart muscles, despite taking the necessary medications for treatment.

He added that the previous treatment for reflux was a surgery to close the valve, but the risk is 5%, in addition to the elderly who suffer from the disease refusing to undergo the operation.

He added that the treatment that the team resorted to is the installation of a clamp, the price of which amounts to 250 thousand dirhams, to reduce the size of the valve and prevent blood from refluxing into the left ventricle, and thus reduce shortness of breath and follow the patient's life easily, adding that the catheterization team that performed the operation underwent two workshops in Belgium, and another in The state.

He explained that the hospital chose 10 cases of patients who suffer from severe regurgitation and weakness of the heart muscle, but the number was reduced to only four cases, two of whom preferred to travel abroad, while a catheterization was performed and a patient was finally planned.

He stated that the clamp is made of cobalt and chromium and does not contain any animal tissue, explaining that it is not rustproof, and remains with the patient for life to regulate the work of the mitral valve in the heart, adding that some cases require the installation of more than one clamp, according to the weakness of the heart muscle.

Al-Nouriani added that the cost of the operation does not exceed 10 thousand dirhams per patient, but the cost of the clamp reaches 250 thousand dirhams. To be borne by low-income patients, calling on the Ministry of Health and insurance companies in the country to include the catheter in the list of services they provide to patients so that they can perform the operation easily, especially since some cases require the operation as soon as possible and cannot be treated without catheterization or surgery.

He reported that 7% of the elderly patients over 65 years of age suffer from weakness in the heart muscle, and severe reflux, and their degrees of reflux vary from the first, which is the least severe, to the fourth degree, which is the most severe cases, and is usually chosen for catheterization and clamp installation.
