• Like a workbench, a shared craft workshop, opened its doors two years ago north of Rennes.

  • In this third place, craftsmen share the same premises, machines and tools in a spirit of sharing and conviviality.

  • Individuals can also come and tinker on certain niches.

The noises of motors gave way to the soft sounds of the hammer, the soldering iron and the sander.

At 5 rue Bahon-Rault, in the north of Rennes, a former car garage now serves as a coworking space for artisans.

In this vast 1,200 m² workshop, owned by the city, different trades rub shoulders with a cabinetmaker, a metalworker, a carpenter, a jeweler or an upholsterer.

You also come across private individuals who have come to fix up wooden furniture or try their hand at welding.

Everyone here shares the same machines and tools in a spirit of exchange and conviviality.

An atypical third place dedicated to crafts, Comme un establish opened its doors in June 2020 under the leadership of Benjamin Danjou and Edvin Bernardin.

Passionate about DIY, these two friends have long dreamed of this place.

“We were both engineers and we wanted to change our lives and get involved in a social and solidarity economy project,” says Benjamin.

Breaking the isolation of artisans

First associative before becoming cooperative, this project is a response to the problems that many craftsmen are confronted with.

“Some people feel a little isolated in their workshop or are cramped and need space to work.

The cost of tools and machines can also be a brake”, emphasizes Edvin, defending “a new model for craftsmanship”.

Two years later, the formula seems to be attractive since the shared workshop, recently labeled “local factory” as part of the France Relance plan, now has 87 members and welcomes 27 craftsmen.

Some only rent the premises for a few hours.

Others live there all year round in wooden boxes of about ten square meters.

This is the case of Stéphanie Arcay-Novo who became a designer and restorer of lampshades.

"I basically wanted to have my own shop but there were a lot of constraints," she says.

And I didn't want to be alone to start my business either”.

A growing interest in DIY

More than just a place of work, As a workbench also wants to be “a place to live”, underlines Benjamin, who plans to organize cultural events and conferences there.

A place also open to all with a growing interest of individuals for DIY and handmade.

“We feel it with this trend of “Do it yourself” and it was further accentuated during confinement where people wanted to do small decoration or DIY jobs but without necessarily having the space and the tools” , says Benjamin.

The Comme un tabli team also plans to open the place to schools in order to introduce students to crafts and why not encourage vocations.
