Finnish President Sauli Niinistö has been on a quick visit to the United States, where he had a meeting with his ditto Joe Biden.

They agreed to strengthen the ties between the United States and Finland in the future.

During the meeting, they also called Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, reports among others Reuters.

Afterwards, Biden wrote on Twitter that Andersson was called up to discuss an expanded collaboration.

"Both countries are valued defense partners for the United States and NATO," Joe Biden tweeted.

At a joint press conference after Friday's meeting, the US President also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the Nordic countries.

- My predecessor Barack Obama used to say that if you let the Nordic countries handle one thing, everything will probably go well, he said according to Yle.

More meetings await

Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist will travel to Finland on Saturday to hold talks with the Finnish government.

Participating on the Finnish side are President Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister Sanna Marin and Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen.

The agenda includes Russia's attacks on Ukraine, security policy developments and co-operation between Sweden and Finland.

Andersson and Marin will hold individual talks and will answer questions from the press in the afternoon.

Hultqvist and Kaikkonen will also hold individual talks.

Defense co-operation between Sweden and Finland has deepened in recent years.

Both countries were invited to NATO's Extraordinary Foreign Ministers' meeting on Friday, despite the fact that the countries are not members.

However, a partnership has been entered into with the military alliance.

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the two countries are participating in all NATO consultations on the crisis.
