The UN Human Rights Council has decided to set up an independent committee to investigate the local human rights situation following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, held an urgent debate on the 4th following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

In it, a British representative said, "There seems to be no limit to the actions of the Putin administration," and a Lithuanian representative said, "The Russian army has taken control of Europe's largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine." If the nuclear power plant is damaged, the suffering of humankind will be indescribable in words. "

The board voted on a resolution to establish an independent committee to investigate the local human rights situation, strongly condemning the Russian attack as a violation of human rights and a violation of international humanitarian law. It was adopted by a majority of 32 countries including Japan.

Russia and Eritrea opposed, and 13 countries including China abstained.

Prior to the vote, Russian representatives argued that the resolution did not mention the attacks carried out by the Ukrainian side in areas virtually controlled by pro-Russian factions in eastern Ukraine and were unacceptable.

The resolution of the Human Rights Council is not legally binding, and the effectiveness of the committee to be established will be questioned as Russia continues to attack.
