China News Agency, United Nations, March 4 (Reporter Madlin) The United Nations Security Council held an emergency public meeting on the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine on the 4th.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs DiCarlo and the International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Grossi briefed the Security Council on the situation.

Earlier media reports said that Ukraine's largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, was attacked on the night of the 3rd local time.

Grossi said that Ukraine has confirmed to the International Atomic Energy Agency that Russian forces are now in control of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

The building that was hit was the training center of the nuclear power plant. The reactors, cooling towers and other facilities were not attacked and are still operating normally.

But he also pointed out that the nuclear power plant is controlled by military personnel and there is still a risk of accidents.

DiCarlo said that military operations against nuclear power plants and surrounding areas violated international humanitarian law, which is clearly stipulated in Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, and all parties should cease fire immediately.

The United States, Britain, France and other countries have condemned Russia for launching military operations against nuclear power plants and demanded that Russia withdraw its troops immediately.

Representatives from Brazil and other countries called for preventing a repeat of the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Nebenja, said that the safety of Ukraine's nuclear facilities is one of Russia's greatest concerns.

The Russian army is protecting the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant from power interruptions.

There were no casualties among nuclear power plant workers.

The fighting at the nuclear power plant was entirely deliberately provoked by Ukrainian saboteurs to force the Russian army to attack the nuclear power plant.

They opened fire on the Russian army in the training center building, and set fire to the building when they fled. The Russian army was forced to fight back.

Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said that China is closely following the latest developments in the situation in Ukraine and expressed concern over reports about the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

According to information obtained by the International Atomic Energy Agency from Ukraine's nuclear regulatory authority, no damage was found to major equipment at the nuclear power plant and no change in radiation levels.

We have also noted the information and clarifications provided by the Russian side on relevant issues.

China attaches great importance to nuclear safety and security issues, and hopes that relevant parties will act cautiously and jointly ensure the safety of relevant nuclear facilities in Ukraine with the professional technical assistance of the IAEA Secretariat.

Zhang Jun pointed out that the Ukrainian crisis is still evolving.

The most important thing at the moment is to ease tensions, avoid more civilian casualties, and increase diplomatic efforts to return to the track of political settlement as soon as possible.

Russia and Ukraine have held two rounds of direct dialogue and negotiation, and reached a preliminary consensus on the establishment of a humanitarian corridor.

China welcomes this and hopes that it will help better protect civilians and facilitate the safe evacuation of foreign nationals, including Chinese citizens.

We encourage Russia and Ukraine to stick to the general direction of a political settlement, and reach a solution through negotiation that accommodates the legitimate concerns of both sides and is conducive to the long-term stability of Europe.

Zhang Jun stressed that China welcomes all diplomatic efforts that are conducive to promoting a political settlement, and has played and will continue to play a constructive role in this regard.

The international community should remain calm and rational, take a responsible, fair and objective attitude to create a favorable atmosphere and conditions for the parties to negotiate directly.

Any action must be conducive to de-escalating the situation and resolving it diplomatically, rather than intensifying conflicts and fueling the fire, leading to further escalation of the situation.
