Russia attacks Europe's largest nuclear power plant

Fighting was reported around midnight (local time) near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, located in southern Ukraine.

Russian tank or artillery fire hit an administrative building dedicated to training and a laboratory, triggering a fire.

The emergency services indicated that the reactor located nearby was inactive.

It does, however, contain nuclear fuel, which could have caused a dangerous leak if damaged.

At 6:20 a.m. (5:20 a.m. Paris time), the fire was extinguished and plant officials assured that nuclear safety was "guaranteed", with normal radiation levels.

“Someone in Russia has to put their feet up (…) and get rid of this guy,” said the Republican senator during a television broadcast.

He then drove home the point in a series of tweets, adding that "the only ones who can fix this are the Russians."

Twitter had not reacted on Friday morning, while calls for violence are prohibited by its charter.
