Two men appeared this Wednesday before the criminal court of Grenoble (Isère) to answer for the facts of capture, transport, detention and destruction of protected non-domestic animal species.

According to

Le Dauphiné Libéré

, a 71-year-old retiree and his 40-year-old son owned more than 40,000 butterflies, 1,360 of which were specimens of protected species.

One of the most important collections in France

During the search of their home in April 2021, the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) and the gendarmes found inventory notebooks and computer files listing the GPS coordinates of the capture locations, located around the world.

According to the OFB agent heard as a witness, this collection was one of the largest in France.

After acknowledging the facts, the defendants were sentenced to fines of 5,000 euros for the son, including 3,000 suspended, and 20,000 euros for the father, including 10,000 suspended.

Confiscated, the collection will be handed over to the Natural History Museum of Grenoble.
