Live War Ukraine - Russia, live
General Andrei Sukhovetsky, 47, has been killed in a clash with the Ukrainian army and is the highest-ranking casualty so far in the Russian army.
Although the circumstances of his death are still unclear (the news circulated for hours that he had been shot by a Ukrainian sniper), his death was confirmed online by a senior Russian official.
"It is with great sadness that we have received the news of the death of our friend, General Sukhovetsky, during the special operation in Ukraine," read a message written by Sergey Chipilyov, of the Russian parachute force.
"We express our deep condolences to his family
. "
General Sukhovetsky was promoted in October 2021 as second in rank in the 41st Army Division.
He had received the medal of military merit for his participation in the second Chechen war, in the occupation of Crimea and in the Syrian war.
His death was a morale boost to the Ukrainian military
, as a sign that the military operation is not proceeding according to Putin's plans and is meeting greater than expected resistance.
Western military sources pointed out that his death could be due to indiscriminate fire at the front and the need to take positions closer to the Ukrainian resistance.
According to the Ukrainian government, up to 9,000 Russian soldiers may have lost their lives in the first eight days of the military operation.
After days of refusing to provide figures,
the Kremlin finally acknowledged that 498 soldiers have been killed so far
in the "special military operation" in Ukraine, and at least 1,600 have been wounded.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet officially acknowledged the death of General Andrei Sukhovetsky, although reports from Moscow suggest that his body has already been repatriated and that a funeral will be held in his honor on Saturday.
