There was a big explosion at the Islamic Shiite mosque in the center of Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan after 1:00 pm on the 4th.

A local hospital told NHK that the explosion killed at least 56 people and injured nearly 200 people.

Many people visited the mosque for Friday worship, and media reported that two men engaged police at the entrance, one of whom entered the building, according to local police. It means that he had self-destructed.

No criminal statement has been issued so far, but security officials are investigating it as a terrorist incident by Islamic extremists.

In Pakistan, terrorist attacks targeting minority Islamic Shiite religious institutions have repeatedly occurred, and as the political situation in neighboring Afghanistan becomes unstable, there are concerns about the deterioration of public security.
