• Courts A court investigates Ada Colau for granting subsidies to entities related to the 'commons'

The judicial declaration of the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, as being investigated for alleged irregularities in the granting of aid and subsidies to entities related to her political party, Barcelona en Comú, began with a protest.

Specifically, that of the mayor herself who decided to enter through a different door to the Ciutat de la Justícia and not the one where a large group of people gathered to support her along with another, smaller one, who criticized her policy at the head of the Consistory.

It was the first anecdote of the day, but significant since the mayor of Barcelona entered through the door of the courts that leads to Hospitalet de Llobregat, which shows that she is not comfortable with being accountable to justice.

And that after leaving the statement Colau said he felt calm.

She only answered questions from the Prosecutor's Office and her lawyers and not from the Association for Transparency and Democratic Quality that filed the complaint against her a few months ago.

According to judicial sources, the mayor denied before the judge having ordered an increase in aid and subsidies to these entities, DESC Observatory, in which Colau worked, Engineers Without Borders, Platform of People Affected by Mortgage (PAH) or Alliance against Energy Poverty, when he took office and that he limited himself to extending existing agreements and agreements from the previous municipal mandate, that of the convergent Xavier Trias.

Colau explained that there were several intervention reports and reports from the general secretary of the City Council that supported the processing of these awards since in no case were irregularities found.

Sources of his defense explained that the aid and subsidies are given through a contest or directly, that they must have an exceptional nature and a public interest, and that these also include those that are given to entities, such as Cáritas, that offer a specific service. and permanent.

In this sense, in 2020 the municipal intervention recommended that these subsidies to these specific entities that have been carrying out a social task for years should be included in the annual budgets to avoid exceptionality.

In addition, Colau stressed that she did not restart the delivery of money to these related entities, such as the PAH or DESC, and explained the social work they carry out.

He also pointed out that after the Prosecutor's Office closed the open investigation after a complaint by Catalan Lawyers for the Constitution indicating that there was no crime but a possible irregularity since both Colau and other 'commons' councilors had links with these entities, he consulted with the General Secretary of the Consistory if he should have abstained in the concession and they answered that he acted correctly since he did not have a "

Precisely, the Prosecutor's Office considered that not abstaining in a vote for the granting of public subsidies to related entities was not a crime of prevarication but possibly an administrative offense and for this reason it filed a complaint against Colau and the 'commons' deputies in Congress and former councilors Jaume Asens and Gerardo Pisarello.

In this open procedure against Colau in the Court of Instruction number 21 of Barcelona from the Public Ministry, it is considered that the complaint is almost traced to the one that closed last July without finding evidence of a crime.

In the next few days, the mayor's lawyers plan to request the filing of this procedure.
