• This Thursday marked the fourth day of the trial of Dr Lionel Guedj, a millionaire dentist from the northern districts of Marseille accused of dental mutilation on 322 patients who are civil parties.

  • Since the start of the trial, the dentist has been on the defensive, aggressive, without questioning his methods which consisted of chaining patients at a frantic pace.

  • However, the end of the day was marked by a timid mea culpa.

It is the very beginning of a mea culpa, which arose at the very end of a fourth day of the trial with the air of a boxing fight between Lionel Guedj and the rest of the room of the Marseille criminal court.

In response to the public prosecutor, the flow of the voice of the former dentist, often fast and nervous so far, is slower.

“I lacked hindsight, that's for sure, recognizes Lionel Guedj.

We were caught in a gear and an important work rhythm.

I was blinded by certain things, and there was a lack of lucidity on my part.

"And to add:" Let's say that we had such a number of patients in the office that yes, there were medical errors that were made.

»

Since the opening of the trial on Monday, this is the first time that the one who was the richest dentist in France has made the link between his frantic work pace, nearly 70 patients a day at the rate of one patient every ten minutes, and the numerous complications of the latter, which present cysts and other abscesses.

No less than 322 of them have decided to become civil parties in this river trial, for which Lionel Guedj is accused of dental mutilation between 2006 and 2012.

Conspiracy theory

So far, the former dentist from the northern districts, as recalled by the director of investigation who questioned him at the bar, "denied en bloc" the facts with which he was accused, getting bogged down in a conspiracy theory sometimes bordering on the absurd.

Thus, during his hearing before the investigators, as recalled by this same gendarme, Lionel Guedj affirmed: “The gendarmerie exerted pressure on the complainants so that they file a complaint.

“Never any apology to the civil parties.

Instead, since the start of the trial, Lionel Guedj has claimed that he was trained "by the best" and that they had a majority of "happy" patients.

Faced with this aggressive attitude, on the defensive, even arrogant, the president of the court Céline Ballerini decides to broadcast telephone tapping on this Thursday morning.

In one of them, Lionel Guedj talks with another dentist.

The latter is supposed to advise Lionel Guedj in a dispute before the council of the Order between the dentist of the northern districts and a dissatisfied patient.

And for good reason, as this adviser wonders: “Why did you crown teeth that seem healthy to me on the X-ray?

»

The first elements of the criminal investigation will suggest that this practice, almost systematic by Dr. Guedj, of fitting prostheses in patients, including those who came to consult for a simple cavity, had the sole purpose of profit.

"Upstairs, you made bridges on healthy teeth," adds the adviser.

There has been an overconsumption of care.

“And to warn him:” The expert who will examine your file, it is not convenient!

»

“Is there a single moment when you are going to succeed in questioning yourself?

»

Invited to react, Lionel Guedj made a very personal selection of this listening.

“He says that the expert is not at all convenient.

A positive point for me!

The president of the court takes her head in her hands, then gets annoyed.

"Is there a single moment when you will succeed in questioning yourself? Céline Ballérini is surprised.

You would do well to think about it.

You are gambling your life before this tribunal.

»

A repeated warning before suspending the hearing, this Thursday evening, and thus concluding the first week of this river trial, faced with an ever more acrimonious Lionel Guedj when asked about his practices, not hesitating to cut the speech.

“If you want to be heard, you have to make an effort on yourself, sir, advises Céline Ballerini.

You don't listen when you are questioned.

You're as nervous as you're on wiretapping.

And it harms you, sir.

Think.

You are having a bad time.

I tell you things.

Lionel Guedj nods in a small voice, visibly touched.

He faces up to ten years in prison.
