President Emmanuel Macron held a speech Wednesday evening at the Élysée Palace to discuss the war in Ukraine and the role that France must play.

A speech two days before the deadline to declare oneself a presidential candidate.

The Head of State did not fail to refer to it, without officially launching.

TO ANALYSE

A speech with great gravity, but which did not overshadow the presidential deadline.

Emmanuel Macron spoke Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. to discuss the war in Ukraine, the role of France and the repercussions for the French.

A speech with a standing president, in front of the French, European and Ukrainian flags, from the Élysée Palace.

A way to mark once again the support of Paris in Kiev.

A conflict that challenges democracy

In a serious tone, with a fixed gaze, the Head of State denounced "a war nourished by a revisionist reading of the history of Europe", and insisted: "It is quite alone and deliberately that Vladimir Putin chose war."

Emmanuel Macron, however, recalled that France was not at war with Russia, ensuring that he wanted to stay in contact "as much as possible" with the master of the Kremlin.

With a closed face throughout this speech, Emmanuel Macron believes that these events are the signal of a change of era.

"Our Europe has entered a new era", he explains, "a brutal return to tragedy" which calls democracy into question.

References to the presidential campaign

Democracy precisely, it was question with the presidential election to come in France.

And the Elysée tenant did not fail to refer to it.

"This campaign will allow an important democratic debate for the Nation", he underlines, without however having officially declared himself a candidate.

Emmanuel Macron is already imagining the aftermath.

"Your attachment to freedom, to equality, to fraternity, to France's place in the world, I will never stop defending them," he said in his speech.

A promise that looks like a candidacy for his re-election.

He only has two days left to make it official.
