It was the Ukrainian ambassador to the Council of Europe, whose headquarters is in Strasbourg, Borys Tarasyuk, who called on Tuesday, during a press conference, to purely and simply exclude Russia from the pan-European organization.
The latter having so far "only" decided on Friday to "suspend" the activities of Russian delegates and parliamentarians within it.
A watchdog of Human Rights on the European continent, the Council of Europe, created in 1949, brings together almost all the States of the European continent, including Russia and Ukraine.
The ECHR seized
“Suspending Russia from its participation in the Committee of Ministers (the Council of Europe's executive) and in its Parliamentary Assembly is not enough,” said the Ukrainian diplomat.
"It would seem logical to us that Russia should be completely excluded from the Council of Europe", launched the Ukrainian ambassador, hoping that the Committee of Ministers of the Council, where the 47 permanent representatives of its member countries sit (minus Russia since its “suspension”) will decide on Wednesday in this sense during its regular weekly meeting.
Borys Tarasyuk also announced that his country had seized the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to take emergency measures against Russia.
"The fundamental right to life is being violently violated every minute by Russian troops," he said.
For the record, the Council had already sanctioned Russia in 2014 when it annexed Crimea.
