Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich, who has been under sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has decided to sell the English Premier League club Chelsea.

"I have always made decisions with the best interests of the club in mind," Abramovich said.

Abramović, who bought the club in 2003, said he would donate all the net proceeds from the sale of the club to a charitable foundation for victims of the Ukraine war.

He also said he would not get his £1.5 billion loan back from the club.

In British politics, the level of demand for sanctions against Russian President Putin and close friend Abramovich has risen sharply.

Labor leader Kier Starmer said in the House of Commons that "Abramovich is a person who is being watched with interest by the British Interior Ministry because of his relationship with the Russian government and his corruption."

"Prime Minister Johnson said last week that Abramovich was subject to sanctions," Starmer said.

Abramovich, who is estimated by Forbes to have a net worth of $13.3 billion and about 16 trillion won, is struggling to evade British sanctions, Reuters reported.

Britain's Labor MP Chris Bryant criticized Abramovich, saying, "The government is responding too slowly," saying Abramovich was trying to dispose of his assets in the UK because he was afraid of sanctions.
