Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, affirmed that based on the approach and legacy of the founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, "may God rest his soul," focus on sustainable development, and in line with the vision of the wise leadership that climate action provides opportunities for economic growth. and sustainable social development, the UAE views hosting the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) with great responsibility and a strong will to build bridges of communication and cooperation with the international community in an effort to create a proactive course that ensures the participation of all parties in climate action efforts.

This came on the occasion of the formation of the Supreme National Committee to oversee the preparations for the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at its twenty-eighth session (COP28), which is scheduled to be hosted in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2023.

The committee held its first meeting via video communication technology under the chairmanship of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with the presence and participation of all members.

His Highness said: The UAE will work closely with the United Kingdom, the President of the twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties (COP26), and the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, which will host the twenty-seventh Conference of the Parties (COP27), to build on the momentum achieved and complete efforts in preparation for the twenty-eighth Conference of the Parties, Raising the ceiling of climate ambitions, and facilitating reaching practical solutions that will bring long-term economic and social benefits to the region and the world as a whole.

His Highness added: After the UAE succeeded in bringing the world together at Expo 2020 Dubai, it will take advantage of its track record in holding international events to ensure that the COP28 conference focuses on finding practical solutions and ensuring the participation and inclusion of all relevant parties, including developing and developed countries. , the public and private sectors, scholars, civil society, and experts in various sectors in order to achieve lasting progress for all.

The formation of the Higher Committee is an affirmation of the importance of the Conference of Parties in advancing and directing the course of climate negotiations between countries of the world, creating equal opportunities for the participation of all parties in finding effective climate solutions, and benefiting from the conference as a distinct platform that contributes to strengthening the proactive approach adopted by the UAE in the climate action process to achieve sustainable economic development.

His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and the UAE's Special Envoy for Climate Change, was assigned the task of Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Committee.

The committee includes in its membership a number of ministers and officials from various government sectors to ensure work according to a comprehensive approach aimed at coordinating and integrating efforts between the various sectors in the country at the strategic, diplomatic, political, economic, technical and organizational levels in preparation for the 28th COP.
