Egypt explains why it voted against Russia's use of force against Ukraine

Yesterday, Wednesday, Egypt revealed the reasons for voting in favor of a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, “demanding that Russia immediately stop using force against Ukraine.”

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on its official Facebook page, justifying the reasons for voting in favor of the resolution, at a time when there was a difference in attitudes among Egyptians on social media.

The ministry said that the affirmative vote came "out of its firm belief in the rules of international law and the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations," noting the need to "search for a quick political solution to end the crisis through dialogue and peaceful means and through active diplomacy."

However, Egypt affirmed in its statement before the United Nations General Assembly that "we should not ignore the discussion of the roots and causes of the current crisis, and dealing with them in a manner that ensures defused the crisis and achieves security and stability."

She pointed out "its refusal to employ the economic sanctions approach outside the framework of the mechanisms of the multilateral international system, based on previous experiences, which had severe negative humanitarian effects, and led to the aggravation of the suffering of civilians over the past decades."

Egypt called for all parties to assume the due responsibility to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to everyone in need, without any discrimination, while ensuring the smooth passage of foreign residents across the border, as there were some reports of discriminatory treatment.

Among the reasons mentioned by Egypt is its warning of the consequences of the economic and social effects of the current crisis on the entire global economy, “which is still suffering from the repercussions of the pandemic, and perhaps the increasing disruption in supply chains and international air traffic is the best proof of that.”

She pointed out that "the effectiveness and credibility of the ability of the international multilateral action mechanisms in the face of successive challenges and crises depends on dealing with all international crises in accordance with one and consistent criteria consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter without passing decades during which the fait accompli and human suffering have been established."

On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution with a majority vote of 141 countries, including Egypt, while 5 countries opposed it and 35 abstained, including China, among the 193 member states.

The decision was met with a storm of applause.

The five countries that voted against the resolution are Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria.

The resolution, which was issued after more than two days of interventions, demands Moscow "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces" from Ukraine, and "condemns Russia's decision to increase the state of readiness of its nuclear forces."

And it "denounces" the resolution put forward by the European Union in coordination with Ukraine, "in the strongest terms" of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and affirms "upholding the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity" of Ukraine, including its "territorial waters."

The resolution, titled "Aggression against Ukraine", calls for unimpeded humanitarian access - against the background of tough debates in the Security Council on a Franco-Mexico draft resolution on the same subject - and "deplores the complicity of Belarus" in the attack on Ukraine.
