• Violent storm Eunice swept across northern Europe on February 18.

  • The gusts of wind got the better of the transmitter mast of the free radio station Radio campus Lille.

  • The associative media has launched an appeal for donations to finance repairs and temporary solutions to continue broadcasting on the FM band.

Radio silence.

Storm Eunice, which swept through Hauts-de-France on February 18, caused a lot of damage.

Its impressive gusts of wind even got the better of the antenna that allowed Radio Campus Lille to broadcast its programs over the airwaves.

Pending possible compensation from its insurance, the associative media, based on the Villeneuve d'Ascq campus, has launched an appeal for donations to finance the change of its mast and find temporary solutions to continue broadcasting.

In 53 years, she has known galleys, the Lille community radio station Radio Campus (106.6 FM).

But a tile of this magnitude remains fortunately quite rare: “Since the creation of the radio, this is the third time that the antenna mast has broken.

The last time we had to replace it was about fifteen years ago,” recalls Eric Bross, president of the association that manages Radio campus Lille.

Digital and the web are not enough

It took storm Eunice and its gusts of wind exceeding 100 km/h to temporarily silence this free metropolitan radio station.

“We can continue to broadcast in DAB + and in streaming, but this deprives all the listeners accustomed to following us on the FM band.

We also have the obligation to transmit to keep our frequency with the ANFR, the authority which manages the frequencies”, continues the president of Radio campus Lille.

And replacing the mast which makes it possible to broadcast on the hertzian network is not an easy task, in particular because the beast is 40 m high.

"We are in the process of making estimates, but we already know that the cost will be very high," laments Eric Bross.

Certainly, the administrator is rather confident to obtain compensation from his insurance, but the delays are long.

Suddenly, in order not to be absent from the airwaves for too long, Radio campus has tweaked temporary solutions.

Currently, it is broadcasting in degraded mode thanks to the antenna of Radio Pacot, in Lambersart.

Except that the power of this transmitter is not sufficient.

“With our mast, we could be picked up up to 60 km.

There, the waves do not even reach Villeneuve d'Ascq where we are nevertheless installed, ”regrets the president.

The other solution, paying this one, is to go through a TDF antenna which will ensure optimal coverage.

Hence the appeal for donations which should make it possible to finance this solution as well as the ancillary costs linked to the damage caused by the storm.
