Last week, the Russian-Swedish association Sputnik's chairman Katerina Ekström spoke about the war in Ukraine to Norr Media.

She said, among other things, that "there is no invasion of Ukraine" and that she sympathizes with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

- It was shocking and a very boundless statement from a chairman of an association, says Emmeli Nybom (S), chairman of the culture and leisure committee.

Can get rid of contributions

After this, Luleå municipality investigates the municipal contribution, which for the year 2022 was SEK 110,000, to the association.

This means that in the future the municipality may not grant grants to the association - but they may also withdraw grants.

"Will never support war"

The chairman of the Russian-Swedish association, Katerina Ekström, refuses to appear for an interview because she does not trust the media.

However, she says that the association will write a letter to the municipality and hopes that the investigation will be objective.

- I have never said that it is good to go in and fight.

We will never support war.

We are against invasion of Ukraine, she said, declining to comment on whether or not she still supports President Putin.

The association Sputnik's goal is to create contacts between Russian-speaking immigrants and Swedes to create good living conditions in Sweden.

Hear Emmeli Nybom (S) explain why the association can be affected when an individual speaks in the video above.
