UN: Nuclear conflict 'unimaginable'

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told AFP on Sunday that the outbreak of a nuclear conflict is an "unimaginable" idea, after Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to put his country's nuclear deterrent on alert.

Asked about UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' position on the Russian president's decision, the spokesman said, "Just to think of a nuclear conflict is simply unimaginable."

The Russian president's decision drew condemnation from many countries, especially the United States, which condemned an "unacceptable" escalation, while NATO described Moscow's behavior as "irresponsible."

Experts considered that the Russian statements fall within the framework of a "psychological war" on the opponent, stressing that these nuclear weapons will not be used.

But some of these experts considered before the start of the war that Russia would not invade Ukraine on a large scale.
