The protest against the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine brought several thousand people onto the streets in various cities in the Rhine-Main region over the weekend.

The attack has had a significant impact on the political debate, also in Frankfurt - including the lifetime of the nuclear power plants.

How fortunate we can be to live in a functioning democracy can also be seen in Wiesbaden: Because in Hesse, a change at the top of the state government is being prepared at this time, which could hardly be more businesslike.

Solidarity:

The protests against Russia will continue in the coming week.

According to reports, further rallies are planned at least in Frankfurt.

The demonstrations so far have been largely peaceful.

The largest gathering to date took place on Saturday with around 7,000 people in downtown Frankfurt - that was much more than the organizers had expected.

In the shadow of the Paulskirche, these gatherings take on a special meaning, which teaches us

that democracy must be defensive. You will also find our commentary on this in tomorrow's issue.

Electricity:

The two candidates for the presidency of the Frankfurt CDU, Bettina Wiesmann and Uwe Becker, have

spoken out in favor of the continued operation of the three nuclear power plants in Germany that are still in operation.

Wiesmann said on Sunday in Sachsenhausen that she was "very much in favor" of extending the term of the reactors, which are scheduled to go offline at the end of the year.

Becker made a similar statement at the event organized by the Sachsenhausen CDU and the Junge Union Süd.

The energy supply had to be readjusted against the background of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

In the medium term, Germany must decouple itself from all energy supplies from Russia, even if it means paying a high price.

These are new sounds, but democracy is there precisely to question previous decisions, to hold debates, to come to new insights together.

Signal: The Hessian state parliament president Boris Rhein (CDU) will meet with the Greens parliamentary group this Tuesday.

After the CDU proposed him as the successor to Prime Minister Volker Bouffier on Friday, the small coalition partner would now like to meet him "to get to know him and his program even better and to exchange views on further work", as stated in the invitation from the Greens parliamentary group leader Wagner is called.

Wagner is "confident that we will continue to work successfully with Boris Rhein".

The contents of the coalition agreement would also apply to the entire legislative period.

But in the state elections next year, the cards would be reshuffled, said Wagner.

That goes without saying, because after all we live in a democracy that we can be proud of, see above.
