On Sunday evening, the EU presented several new sanctions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The entire airspace of the Union will be closed to Russian flights, as will the private flights of Russian oligarchs.

They will not be able to land, take off or fly over the EU.

The state-owned news services Russia today and Sputnik will be banned in the EU.

Ursula Von der Leyen describes these as part of the Kremlin's "media machine".

To be excluded from Swift

The EU also imposes sanctions on Belarus' trade in mineral fuels (coal, petroleum and natural gas), tobacco, wood, cement, steel and iron.

Sanctions are also being imposed on Belarusians who support Russia's war effort in Ukraine.

According to EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, all foreign ministers in EU member states have supported the exclusion of Russia from the international transaction system Swift.

The formal decision to implement the measures will be made on Monday.
