Sudan.. Resistance committees present a political charter for the transitional period

Sudanese groups leading protests against the October 25 military coup published their political vision for the first time on Sunday, outlining the main demands they hope will unite civilian groups.

The charter announced by the resistance committees sets a transitional period of two years under the rule of a prime minister appointed by the signatories to the document to be head of state and commander-in-chief of the army until a transitional legislative council ratifies the constitution.

The charter also stated that the military and civilian leaders involved in seizing power on October 25 would be held accountable and would reject any negotiation with the military.

The charter is an attempt to take advantage of the power of the movement in the street and turn it into a coherent political force, after this move resulted in mass rallies and protests for months, but it faced a security crackdown in which dozens were killed.

Members of the Resistance Committees have also been arrested, but many were released last week during a visit by a UN official.

The Charter for the Establishment of People's Authority avoids a number of thorny social and economic issues and stipulates that any group that did not participate in the Bashir regime or the coup can sign it with their support.

The charter ignored a transitional document in 2019 that established the partnership between the army and civilians and called for a comprehensive review of the Juba Peace Agreement signed in 2020 in an attempt to end the internal fighting in the country.

The charter also envisions the establishment of courts specialized in human rights issues and the option of resorting to international organizations to achieve transitional justice.
