Russian airspace is barred to all aircraft "owned, leased or operated by anyone connected with Britain" and those registered there, Russian air regulator Rosaviatsia said in a statement.
The ban affects not only flights to Russia, but also those flying over Russian territory, a key space linking Europe to Asia, according to the same source.
London on Thursday imposed a new series of sanctions against Russia, in particular prohibiting the Russian airline Aeroflot, a member of the international SkyTeam alliance with Air France-KLM, from serving the United Kingdom.
The British sanctions were taken in reaction to the launch by Vladimir Putin's Russia on Thursday of its invasion of Ukraine.
