Russian ground forces entered Ukraine on Thursday from several directions, according to the Ukrainian border guards, hours after President Vladimir Putin announced an attack on the country.

The Ukrainian border guards said in a statement that Russian tanks and other heavy equipment crossed the border in several northern regions, as well as from the Crimean peninsula annexed by the Kremlin in southern Ukraine.

An adviser to Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs said Thursday that at least eight people were killed and nine wounded in the Russian bombing, with Moscow launching a major air and ground attack on its neighbour.

The border guards also said that columns of the Russian army crossed the Ukrainian border into the Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions.
