Ukraine announces loss of control and contact with its soldiers on an island in the Black Sea

The Ukrainian border guards announced the loss of control over the Ukrainian island of Zmyene in the Black Sea, which is administratively affiliated to the Odessa region in the south of the country, close to the border with Romania.

"According to the information available, the island of Zmini has been occupied," the border guards said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

The border guards added that they had lost contact with the Ukrainian military and border guards on the island.

The Russian Defense Ministry did not issue any official comment on the Russian forces' control of the mentioned island.

It is noteworthy that Zmienni Island (Ethman Island) is located in the Black Sea, 35 kilometers from the Ukrainian coast. Until 2009, there was a debate between Ukraine and Romania about sovereignty over it, and this comes against the background of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
