European Union: Our sanctions will have huge repercussions on Russia

European Union leaders agreed during their summit in Brussels to impose a new package of sanctions on Russia in response to the military operation in Ukraine, targeting the financial, energy and transport sectors.

In their statement, the European Union leaders stressed that the "repercussions" of these measures would be "enormous and dangerous."

"In close coordination with EU partners and allies, these measures will also include dual-use goods (civilian and military) and the issuance of visas, without a detailed explanation of the sanctions," the statement said.

The French presidency said: "This document was previously negotiated and adopted at the beginning of the summit. The meeting has just begun and consultations are continuing on the details of political, economic and humanitarian support for Ukraine."

The Heads of State and Government of the European Union are working to prepare and urgently adopt additional economic and individual sanctions against Belarus due to the military operation in Ukraine.

European and diplomatic sources reported that there is no European consensus so far on excluding Russia from the "Swift" banking exchange system, noting that Kiev demanded this matter, but some countries preferred to keep it for a future package of sanctions.
