The Ukrainian armed forces have announced a plan to mobilize reservists starting this Wednesday, due to growing fears of a military escalation with
Russia
.
At the same time, Ukraine
's National Security and Defense Council
has approved declaring a state of emergency throughout the territory, a measure that still needs to be ratified by Parliament.
Faced with rising tensions between Kiev and Moscow, Ukraine's parliament today approved a bill that will allow all citizens to
own firearms for use in self-defense
.
While arming its citizens, it mobilizes reservists between the ages of 18 and 60, for a maximum term of one year.
Ukraine has about 200,000 reservists and 250,000 active military personnel in the armed forces.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday urged its citizens to immediately leave Russia.
"In connection with the intensification of Russian aggression against Ukraine (...), the Foreign Ministry recommends that Ukrainian citizens refrain from traveling to the Russian Federation and those who are in this country to
leave its territory immediately
", Ukrainian diplomacy said in a statement.
Kiev considers that, under the current circumstances, consular assistance to Ukrainians may be limited.
"We emphasize that ignoring these recommendations will significantly complicate the adequate protection of Ukrainian citizens in the Russian Federation," insisted Foreign Affairs.
